The Youth Art Exhibition was conceived when Phillips’ Mill decided to build on the success of its well respected adult Art Exhibition, which began in 1929. As the adult show seeks participation from artist living within a 25 mile radius of the Mill, the YAE solicits participation from the art departments of high schools located within a 25 mile radius of the Mill. It is the art department at each school that selects the student work. Works are juried for awards of cash prizes with judging in four categories: Painting, Works on Paper, Photography, and 3 Dimensional Works. The art teachers have been enthusiastic supporters as well as integral to putting on the show and the YAE planning committee thanks all of them for their efforts. The exhibition could not continue without these dedicated teachers.

From its start in 2014, the show has grown in size each year, both in the number of artists and works displayed as well as the number of participating high schools. The amount of prize money awarded has also grown thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. The exhibition is free for the schools and the artists, no commission on sales is charged and there is no admission fee for visitors. It builds on the unique contribution of Phillips’ Mill to art in the community.

Our Juror for 2020:  Jane Lafarge Hamill

Jane Lafarge Hamill

Jane Lafarge Hamill is a painter and virtual reality artist. After getting her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in figurative painting, she lived and worked in NYC for 10 years before moving to a farm in Lambertville, NJ. Hamill’s current work is abstract, displaying exuberant gestures of color in an array of scale; her most recent paintings aim to pack large punches into small spaces; they are 8 x 10 inches. Her virtual reality work explodes this scale into larger than life- size digital translations: they are installations in which the viewer can walk about, while discovering their own agency to interact with the brushmarks surrounding them. She has presented numerous solo exhibitions in NYC and Italy, and her work is in private and public collections internationally. Hamill is represented in NYC by FMLY Gallery, and is currently participating in New Inc at The New Museum; the world’s first museum lead incubator for creatives working at the intersection of art and technology.

Her work can be viewed at www.janelafargehamill.com or on Instagram @janelafarge
