Art Exhibition 2015
“It was at Phillips’ Mill that art first became real to me, where I came to understand that paintings were not just decorative objects hung on walls but the work of flesh-and-blood people who transmitted what they saw into their own visions.” – James A. Michener (1907-1997)
The Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition has been the premier art show in the Delaware Valley since 1929. Founded by the legendary greats, William Lathrop, Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber and William Taylor, among others, the early shows were intended to display work for friends. Famous artists from the New Hope School and beyond soon began to exhibit on a regular basis. Today more than 350 painters and sculptors submit over 500 works of which about 95 framed pieces are juried into the exhibit. The exhibition has grown steadily in prestige and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
This major exhibition invites artists who live within a 25 mile radius of the Mill to enter work for the show. This year 349 works were submitted . Of the works submitted 93 framed pieces were accepted and 13 pieces of sculpture were accepted into the show. There were 19 awards presented representing over $10,000 in prize money.

A group of Art Committee members selected Steve Zazenski’s “Winter Sun, Phillips’ Mill” as this year’s image of the Mill that will appear on posters, postcards and other publicity outlets for the 86th Exhibition.
2015 Honored Artist
The Phillips’ Mill Art Committee has chosen Tom Chesar as the “Honored Artist” for the 86th Juried Art Exhibition.
Tom lives in Stockton and paints scenes from the Delaware Valley and the coast of Maine. He received his B.S. from Rider University and has studied at the Fleisher Art Institute in Philadelphia as well as at the Printmaking Council of New Jersey. Tom has exhibited in many solo and invitational shows, from Trenton to Houston to New York City, as well as locally. He has received more than 75 awards. Tom is a member of the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic and serves on its board of directors.

Jurors Selected
The Phillips’ Mill Art Committee has announced the distinguished group of art experts who have been selected to jury this year’s show. The team will select the art to be exhibited as well as decide whom to award the various cash prizes. Jurors this year are:
Jurors for Painting and Graphics:
Philadelphia artist Elizabeth Osborne is a nationally known artist whose works appear in collections across the country. She received her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Paris, France in 1963 and from 1966-2011 was a professor at PAFA. Ms. Osborne has had many solo exhibitions, been part of numerous group exhibitions and has received numerous awards and fellowships. She presently has an exhibit at the Michener Museum in Doylestown. Barbara Schaff is also a Philadelphia artist. She received her B.A. from Syracuse University and worked as a ceramicist for many years. In 1994 she received a certificate degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in 1994 studied at the China National Academy of Fine Art. Ms. Schaff has had numerous solo exhibitions and her work has been selected to appear in many juried exhibitions as well. She had a solo exhibition at the Michener Museum in 2014. The third juror is Douglas Wiltraut. He graduated from Kutztown University with a BFA in painting in 1973. Currently, he is the president of the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic. Mr. Wiltraut has received numerous awards, including the Butler Institute of American Art Award and most recently the Sylvan Grouse Medal for lifetime achievement from the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. Jurors for Sculpture
George Anthonisen has lived in Bucks County since 1971. He received his B.A. from the University of Vermont and studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He has received several awards and has exhibited in shows around the country, including at the Michener Museum. Mr. Anthonisen’s works are in the permanent collections of the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland, the U.S. Capitol Building, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Michener Museum and Ursinus College. David Cann is a sculptor in Stockton, NJ. and a principal in Moorland Studios. He attended Bucks County Community College and Rutgers University and the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Mercerville, NJ. Last year Mr. Cann was awarded the Patron’s Award for Sculpture at the 85th Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition.
