Shawn Campbell

Join us for a conversation with sculptor Shawn Campbell, who is this year’s Honored Artist for the Juried Art Show.
Shawn’s sculptures intertwine nature imagery with figurative forms. Her people have branches growing out of their heads, possess wings or are crowned with a bird’s nest. She metaphorically reunites humans with nature, the environment from which we’ve grown so separate. Hence, her people are familiar, as if they wandered out of a fairy tale or ancient mythology. They are fey with a touch of the vulnerable. Shawn had always been a two-dimensional artist. She was headed for a painting class when something drew her instead to a sculpture class. It was a difficult time in her life when she had lost someone close to her. The clay in her hands soothed her grief—and freed her creativity. After years running global operations for a talent management company, Shawn became a full-time, award-winning artist. She exhibits widely, including regularly at Phillips’ Mill, where she won the top sculpture prize in 2023. Shawn is the chair of the Phillips’ Mill Member Art Show and Sale.
