A Bucks County Tradition
September 19, 2025
July 27 – August 24
The annual Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill is a time-honored tradition that has celebrated the creative spirit of the region for nearly a century. Serious art collectors from across the region and beyond anticipate the annual Juried Show at Phillips' Mill as an important opportunity to expand their collections. Art lovers everywhere enjoy the breadth of work in the show and the artistic spirit of our community.
Founded in 1929, the Juried Art Show at Phillips' Mill is the first and longest-running juried art exhibition in Bucks County, continuing to draw artists and audiences alike to its historic stone gristmill in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Known for its exceptional quality and deep roots in the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement, the show maintains its prestige by upholding a rigorous selection process, welcoming both emerging and established artists from across the region.
Each year, the exhibition features a new image of the Mill to promote the show. The “Signature Image” is selected by the Art Show Committee following a competition every spring. Artists are encouraged to submit whimsical as well as traditional depictions of the Mill and its surroundings.
The Signature Image for the 96th Annual Juried Art Show
at Phillips’ Mill is “Phillips’ Mill” by Jay McPhillips.
This year’s image by Doylestown artist Jay McPhillips, combines the artist’s trademark charm, vibrant color, and Impressionist influence seen in much of his work. “When I first started painting, I was greatly influenced by the work of the Pennsylvania Impressionists. And I have stuck to that,” says McPhillips
McPhillips’s art journey, however, began in a more corporate setting—as an art director in top New York City advertising agencies where he worked on major accounts like Coca-Cola, crafting visual campaigns for global audiences. A former staffer for Comedy Central, McPhillips also designed print ads for some of the network’s most recognizable shows. He later worked as the graphic designer for McCarter Theatre in Princeton, a position that introduced him to the world of theater and performance. Over the years, he’s lived, worked and found inspiration in such vibrant creative towns as Portland, OR, Boothbay Harbor, ME, Portsmouth, NH, and Portland, ME where he studied at the Maine College of Art.
For the past decade, McPhillips has earned a living designing, painting, and selling his work throughout this area and says his Bucks County years have had the most lasting impact. He describes himself as a “working man’s artist” who likes “making stuff” that reflects the personality of the local shops, restaurants and attractions he has frequented in the many places he has lived. This includes “portraits” of the County Theater in Doylestown, the Swan Bar in Lambertville, the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, and now Phillips’ Mill.
“It is such an honor to be recognized for my image of the Phillips’ Mill, the very place, the creative hub, for such icons as William Langson Lathrop, Fern Coppedge and Daniel Garber,” says a grateful McPhillips.
The Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition is a juried show. The jurors are distinguished figures in the art world, each bringing a fresh perspective to the curation of work. They select from the hundreds of submissions we receive from an extraordinary community of local artists.
This process gives our show a different look each year, but the look is always based in our local community. Our jurors are accomplished artists in their own right, often with an academic background. We’ve had curators and art historians serve as jurors as well. We’re very proud of the shows they design for us.
The show accepts framed artwork, freestanding sculpture, and unframed portfolio pieces, allowing for a diverse presentation of mediums and styles. Submission of both traditional and contemporary works ensures that the Phillips’ Mill Juried Art Show remains true to its origins—exhibiting the work and styles of its day—and a cornerstone of the local cultural calendar.

Each year we honor an artist who has been a loyal participant in the Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition over many years. We announce the honored artist a few months before the show. Be sure to check back in early July for our 2025 honored artist.
We will list the accepted works and their artists for this year’s show on September 9, 2025.
Thank you to all who support our historic juried art show. You enable us to continue the legacy of William Lathrop, founder of the Phillips’ Mill Community Association along with his friends Daniel Garber, Fern Coppedge, John Folinsbee, Mary Elizabeth Price, Edward Redfield and the many other New Hope School artists who became the core of Pennsylvania Impressionism. They were devoted to exhibiting the art of their time, just as we are committed to showing the art of ours.
Your support is invaluable!
It takes a village to produce an exhibition of this caliber, including the abundance of awards we present to artists. Your support helps us maintain the legacy of our founders, who transformed an aging gristmill into an exhibition space now recognized as the Birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism.
All patron-level supporters receive tickets to the Preview Reception for Patrons and Artists, the art event of the season in Bucks County with music, wine, passed hors d’oeuvres, and the awards ceremony.
Silver, Gold and Platinum patrons see the show first, arriving at 4 pm for a “first look” and opportunity to purchase before the larger crowd arrives at 5 pm. These patrons also receive VIP, on-site parking at the Mill and the opportunity to establish a named award in consultation with the Art Committee, if so desired.
