7th Annual Emerging Playwright Competition Reading of Winning Plays
November 23, 2024
The Emerging Playwright Competition attracts talented playwrights from a 100-mile radius of the Phillips’ Mill Community Association. The goal of the competition is to encourage new work and bring it to the stage. Every year, six short plays are selected by a jury to be read on stage, with talkbacks with the audience following the readings.
You'll find more information about this special event in the October issue of The Grist.
Make an Impact. Help Preserve History as a Community or Business Partner
Phillips’ Mill is considered the Birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism because it was here, in this 18th-century former grist mill, where artists such as William Lathrop, Daniel Garber, Fern Coppedge and Edward Redfield met to socialize and exhibit their work.
For the past 95 years, the Phillips’ Mill Community Association has served the arts community in this same wonderful and historic space. We are seeking corporate and community sponsors to help us preserve this national treasure, expand our programs and secure our future.
Look for a letter from our Board of Directors in the next few weeks outlining our sponsorship levels and opportunities. Or contact Linda Leffingwell Paton at [email protected] for more information.
95th Birthday Bash Raised Nearly $33,000!
We are delighted to report that our 95th Birthday Bash raised approximately $33,000 for the Preservation Fund. Thank you to all who attended and contributed! Without our 18th-century grist mill, where William Lathrop, Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Fern Coppedge and their friends gathered, socialized and exhibited their work, we would be just another arts organization. The Mill is not just our home; it is a historic landmark under our care. Without the Preservation Fund, we would not be able to provide the TLC the Mill requires on an ongoing basis. Thank you!
Merch Alert!
95th Anniversary Tote Bags on Sale
We need to tout our totes! Because they are pretty cool—and very useful. We created the totes as thank you gifts for our 2024 Juried Art Show patrons (Copper level and above). But they will also be available for purchase at the Mill throughout the show for $20.
All members of the Phillips’ Mill Community Association are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting at the Mill on Tuesday, October 1, at 7 pm. The meeting will follow a wine and cheese social that begins at 6 pm. We’ll be discussing activities, voting on new directors, and learning about actions of the Board.
As an added bonus, you will have a chance to view the 95th Annual Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill!
Phillips’ Mill Photo Committee Members Featured in Local Shows
Several Phillips’ Mill Photo Committee members have recently had their work displayed in juried exhibitions.
Cheryl Bomba’s images were included in the 10th Annual Points of View Art Show and Sale, held August 23-25 at the Prallsville Mills in Stockton, NJ. Lynn Kerr and Scott Hoerl both have work on display through October 31 at Princeton Photography Club’s Lakefront Gallery in Hamilton, NJ. Sharlene Holliday, Sue Ann Rainey and Maria Dreyer all have photos featured in the Raise the Roof: Contemporary Barnscapes exhibit, on display from August 31 to October 6 at the New Hope Arts Gallery.
“Undocumented” by Linda McManus
Phillips' Mill Photo Committee member Linda McManus is equally at home in the worlds of commercial and fine art photography. Having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in black-and-white photography, she honed her architectural photography skills with a job in real estate and her still life skills while serving as lead product photographer for QVC. “I feel that having a camera in my hand on a daily basis has kept my eye sharp and creativity fluid,” says McManus. “Commercial work has paid the bills, but creating fine art will always be my passion.”
